Hispanic Pride!
Gabriela T. Rojas Torres Izunsa
Gabriela T. Rojas Inzunza, born in Elgin Illinois and when she was 8 years old her parents made the decision to return to live in Mexico, since, back then, Elgin has been converted into a violent place with gang and drug problems. They moved to Cuernavaca Morelos of where her mother was from and Gabriela ended her studies of primary, secondary, preparatory and two years of architecture. After Gabriela had studied in Mexico, her parents decided to return again to the United States. The memories Gabriela had were the most beautiful while living in Mexico they are the ones to visit the surrounding towns, to eat the typical food from Yecapixtla and saw the birth of water of the Borbollón of Tehuixtl, the town of magic of Tepoztlán.
The 16 of July of 2006 they arrived in Elgin, but the first of September of 2006 they moved to Beloit, Gabriela remembers the 15 of September, midnight, seeing the cry of Independence of Mexico in the house without furniture alone with a television and she cried yearning for Mexico.

She saw how her two sisters had adapted fast and began speaking English very fluently, although she understands it she does not know how to speak it fluently and it took three years of feeling secure and confident to speak English. Gabriela had wished to continue studying, but she did not in that moment, she did not have the information of the facilities that existed in the United States to study like scholarships, loans or financing. In 2012, she returned to school, studied to be a teacher of children ECE (early childhood Education) and got a job in the school district where she worked for four years.

In that time, Gabriela saw the need of the hispanic students reflected in the teachers. Also she had an experience that made her make an important decision in 2016. She was caring for the mother of a four year old boy who had been lost, while helping translate with the police because no one spoke English, a English teacher as a second language (ESL) came in, she asked what had happened and Gabriela had explained the story, the annoying teacher said “you are the assistant and I am the teacher” you are not able to help with this and she explained that the mother did not speak English and in that moment she was the only one that spoke Spanish. Even after she had listened to the explanation of the teacher, without knowing to speak Spanish, she kept the same position. Gabriela reported the teacher to the director, which recommended to Gabriela that she take the afternoon off (it was a friday) to calm down. The director said she had the option to cry and be the victim or take it and return to study and demonstrate you are better because you speak two languages. The same day, Gabriela went to Blackhawk Technology to investigate and two weeks returned to school to study as a teacher. This experience occurred in 2016 and in 2019 she graduated with an Associate degree of teacher Education.

She applied with the school district, unfortunately they did not call, but then she found a grand opportunity at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to make home visits at the Center of Family Resources. She assisted pregnant women and children, her work of home visits allows her to make prenatal visits, refer families to necessary help, teach families to play with their children to increase the development of their brain. Her family is composed of an incredible husband, Omar
Rojas, a precious daughter of three years old, Cinema, and two sons, Karmie and José Miguel, her family is the engine of her life, so by 2020 she planned to start her Master’s degree. Also, she wanted to have a home visiting office in Beloit to be able to help the parents of children in Beloit. In closing, Gabriela suggests that readers read the Joshua 1:9 quote from the Bible.
